Happened to an old colleague of mine.
His parents bought the rather imposing manor house in a valley overlooking a beautiful Welsh village - then it turned out they'd actually bought seething resentment and a pile of charred rubble.

I think I made a Shakin' Stevens 'This Ole House' joke that was not well received.
