Up to and including the Tom Baker era
The Doctor Who theme tune was uniquely superb. I don't really like what they did with it after that.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 12:48, 1 reply, 15 years ago)
Seconded.
Completely ahead of its time, and used to scare the shit out of me. The Peter Howell version was OK as well, after that... meh.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:03, Reply)
Trouble with the new orchestrated version is...well, it's still a good tune and all
It's just it loses all the atmosphere it used to have when it was made using oscilloscopes and theremins and bits of 8-track tape sellotaped together.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:05, Reply)
I agree.
It's too bombastic now. And the very latest version is shite. Where's the fucking bassline gone?
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:07, Reply)
It's been a bit of a double-edged sword with Moffatt
+ much better writing than Russell "let's make everything gay and Welsh" Davies
+ fewer situations resolved by the lazy technique of pushing buttons to make magic happen
+ Karen Gillan
- theme tune getting steadily worse
- what the fuck is going on with those new-look daleks?
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:11, Reply)
The Daleks have been hit with the same styling fashion
that's affecting other wheeled vehicles. They've come out with a sports crossover model.

Edit: they're the scifi Nissan Juke.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:13, Reply)
Moffat's made a U-turn
and said the old versions will be back.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:14, Reply)
I didn't like the primary colours, either
An upturned bin is difficult to find intimidating at the best of times, it doesn't help if it's a jaunty green.

Edit: It's funny because it's not a primary colour. I am very witty.

None of the new Daleks are green, jaunty or otherwise

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:25, Reply)
I was going to say that
but decided against it for fear of being viewed as a sad old geek.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:29, Reply)
Luckily my reputation in these parts is far beyond salvation
I would say "you're not old" but now the first digit of your age is one higher than mine, so you are.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:31, Reply)
Agreed on the new daleks, they fucking suck
Although that episode was worth watching just for "Would. You. Like. A. Cup. Of. Tea?"
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:39, Reply)
Hahaha yes
And "OK, it's a jammie dodger. But I was promised tea!"
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:41, Reply)
Haha yeah
Loved that.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:43, Reply)
I actually think Matt Smith is a brilliant Doctor
Especially considering the size of the shoes he had to fill. Used to play for Forest, you know
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:46, Reply)
He is a good Doctor
I was really worried at the beginning of the series, but I must admit, I'm sold on him.

Nobody can truly replace David Tennant in my heart though.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:50, Reply)
I'm amazed at how many women say that
I really didn't think he was especially good-looking. More so than Matt Smith, obviously
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:56, Reply)
I think I'm just in love with The Doctor
Since I now totally *would* Matt Smith.

Doesn't count
I'm only in love with the late series Doctors.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:02, Reply)
Does David Morrissey count?
He thought he was the Doctor...
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:03, Reply)
No
Like I say, it's a theory in progress.

But no, David Morrisey does not count. Mental delusions do not a Doctor make.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:06, Reply)
How do you feel about The Master? Or Timothy Dalton's Rassilon?
Am intrigued to see how far this extends
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:07, Reply)
I think it's an attitude thing
So just The Doctor.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:13, Reply)
I'd still do him

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:18, Reply)
Whilst I agree with all of the above
As far as pros and cons go the latter are a mite paltry.

However, you could add;

- disappointing use of the Silurians
- unforgiveable appearance of James Corden
- Rory (although I do feel some kinship with the man, as he is, like me, dating a giant woman who is visibly so far out of his league as to be comedic)
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:24, Reply)
Rory is so lovely,
if a tad possessive.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:30, Reply)
I genuinely can't work out how he pulled her though
He's just too much of a wet blanket for someone as adventurous and mental as Amy
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:32, Reply)
Because she'd given up on adventure and was trying to be normal
As a result of all the therapy after The Doctor didn't come back when he said he would.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:36, Reply)
Good point I suppose
Needed someone to look after her
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:44, Reply)
She kept biting them.

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:45, Reply)
Good job men don't run away when you bite them eh

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:50, Reply)
How would you know?

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:50, Reply)
Wild guess
and graffiti
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:56, Reply)
Damn, I thought I'd had that cleaned.

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:04, Reply)
Are we still talking about graffiti?

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:05, Reply)
You git.

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:09, Reply)
Sorry, sorry, season of good will
Am being civil again now. Try me.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:10, Reply)
Anyway
It was the therapists she was biting, not the boys.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:14, Reply)
They really fucked it up this series
By showing the Weeping Angels MOVE. The twats. That was a brilliant double episode though.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:32, Reply)
Agreed on both counts
That was bang out of order. The ending of that episode was a bit of a let-down but the rest was immense
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:33, Reply)
Remembering that has actually angered me.

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:37, Reply)
I'd better not bring up Martha Jones then

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:45, Reply)
I dunno
She was alright. The worst companion of the new series, no doubt, but I'm not actually *angered* by her.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:51, Reply)
Worst companion EVER
Worse than Melanie Bush. She only had two modes - "cocky" and "panicked", both incredibly badly acted
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 13:57, Reply)
Yeah
That and her Mum hit Tennant. The bitch.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:02, Reply)
Her whole family was just horrendous
Massive, crippling error by all concerned
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:04, Reply)
I think that I'd just blocked it out
Because now that I think about it, it IS annoying me.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 14:12, Reply)
A million times this
Every time they faff about with it it angers me. The 60's one was so much better.
