I've just been out driving through the country lanes in the Jeep and
it was brilliant fun. Having a 4x4 in the snow is ace. Are you loving this weather or hating it?

Alt Q: 4x4s evil or neccessary?
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:30, 36 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
This weather if fucking bent.
When I had a 4x4 it was because I needed one, it was fucking expensive to run though.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:36, Reply)
It's the family pool car, I am borrowing it for the snowy weather. It is a brilliant bit of kit.

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:38, Reply)
are you watching the football?

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:41, Reply)
No.
I'm watching Gremlins.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:01, Reply)
nice touch

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:03, Reply)
Gremlins is shit.
But if I put something I the telly that I'm going to enjoy and get into, I'll never get round to going to the shops and then cooking dinner.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:06, Reply)
Gremlins is brilliant
it's a christmas horror so it can't be shit. I bet you don't like Home Alone either do you?

No. I don't like home alone either.
But neither do I like getting distracted and suddenly thinking 'Eek! I've got no food in!' So at I'm getting ready to head to the shops.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:13, Reply)
The weather is alright here
I helped chop up a tree today.

Alt Q: I don't mind 4x4's especially in the countryside. City ones are a bit annoying but still hardly a pet bugbear
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:37, Reply)
I don't mind snow as long as it's under a foot. I hate ice, espesh ice storms.
Alt: only evil when people get too brave!
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:41, Reply)
How is the winter where you live?

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:43, Reply)
last year we had a blizzard and got 3 feet, year before it was all ice storms
it's snowed twice this month which is highly unusual
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:46, Reply)
man that is harsh
we are all going to die because of 6 inches of snow
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:47, Reply)
yeah, everything has shut down hasn't it?

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:16, Reply)
loving it
I like the adventure and challenge of it.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:46, Reply)

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:48, Reply)
really not
but it's fun, better than miserable sideways rain anyway.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:53, Reply)
true true
I had a nice little snow assisted drift round a corner on the way home which was nice.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:55, Reply)
I am very tempted
to do this coming out of the road I live on as it's really slippy on the corner. But it'd be a really bad idea as I might smash in to stuff. Sad times :(

Is your car front or rear wheel drive berk?

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:02, Reply)
Front
should make having a cheeky powerslide quite easy, but I'm too sensible to risk doing it. On purpose, at least.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:08, Reply)
It's a lot easier to control a powerslide with rear-wheel drive as it is the power to the back wheels that allows you to hold it.
Although in this weather....
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:14, Reply)
I was in a 4x4 and all of a sudden I had no grip but just slid round in an arc before finding traction again
it was freaking awesome.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:03, Reply)
Do you think you're the Fall Guy or something?

(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:06, Reply)
what is 'fall guy?'

turned it off after 11 seconds
looked shit.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:16, Reply)
watching the rear-wheel drive cars is entertaining
but for me the prize goes to the elderly couple I encountered at the weekend, braving awful driving conditions in a Reliant Robin
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:06, Reply)
'braving', no
stupidity on a stick, yes.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:12, Reply)
true
but they were doing a lot better than many by not driving like idiots.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:14, Reply)
Kudos to them, then
it always baffles me how few people can actually drive competently in the snow.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:17, Reply)
you can spot the accidents coming
I watched some fool accelerate towards a roundabout this afternoon and I had a good few seconds to just stand and observe him slide to within a few inches of someone else's passenger door.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:24, Reply)
Necessary for farmers and people who want to off-road in them
an infuriating cuntitude for people who have big shiny ones in the middle of cities which have clearly never seen mud in their lives. That said, I experienced a moment of croissant-magnitude smuggery yesterday when I drove to the top of the (very icy) massive hill I live on without any bother, and there were several 4x4s really struggling who eventually turned round.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:53, Reply)
I have a 4x4 as my second car
I use it for transporting the dogs.

I wear my waxed jacket and green wellies whilst driving it.

I am middle class. Shoot me now.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 20:57, Reply)
People who moan about 4x4s are jealous because they don't have one and drive shit cars instead.
FACT.
(, Mon 20 Dec 2010, 21:45, Reply)
Hating it
All major roads here are closed, no buses or trains running, Sainsburies no longer delivering to my town.
Its now 99% likely I wont be with my family at xmas.
But I now have a backup plan so wont be sat at home alone and the possibility of having a second xmas with family later :)

4x4, fine for the country, poncy useless status symbol anywhere else
