Watch out for ice
If you keep it on for too long you can do more harm than good. Sticking it back under the cold tap would probably be better. At the first aid course I went on last summer, the advice was to leave burns under running water for at least ten minutes, however unconfortable that might be.

Use washing up liquid.
It'll take the sting right out of the burn.
