That occured to me too
Technically they didn't want to destroy the earth, but rather make it uninhabitable for humans, which is also bad.

Also, the Tripods weren't the aliens themselves, rather their transport. Points for remembering it though, the dramatisation was on TV when I was about 10, which would have made you... foetal.

The version I read was imaginatively titled "The Tripods Trilogy" and I can't remember the names of the individual books. Geek fail
