September 30th
looks overwhelmingly likely that I won't get a PhD but I've three or four applications left to stick in; might as well.
Failing that, I suspect a move to London is on the cards as that's where the most jobs are. But it's not definite, I'll have to wait and see what comes up. I could end up anywhere really.

Exciting times for berk
Do you like the idea of moving to London?
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:28, Reply)
Yes, I do
certainly I'd like to give it a go for a bit - Labs mentioned something the other day about if you've reached 40 years old and never lived in London you have no life, but if you've reached 40 years old and still live in London you have no soul. I like that idea. I like that there's always interesting stuff and things to see and that even with cost of living taken in to account the pay is better!
But as I say. I could end up anywhere.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:30, Reply)
So you don't mind then?

(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:32, Reply)
*shrug*
it's the nature of what I do; I always knew I'd end up moving around a bit, and most of the cities I could conceivably work in I'd be happy to live in, so...
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:36, Reply)
I moved around a bit today...
Spent the evening freezing my arse off at a meeting in some village hall, constantly shuffling around to try and keep warm.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:37, Reply)
But the cost of living is such an off-putter
And whilst public transport is great, it isn't free.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:38, Reply)
It's true I'd have to house share if I moved there
which puts me off slightly, but it'd probably be good for me. And yeah rent is expensive but most of the jobs being advertised pay 50% more than I get now, if you include the London weighting.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:42, Reply)
That sounds reasonable.

(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:43, Reply)
I'm still of the view that London is somewhere to visit
Rather than somewhere to live.

Where are your other PhD applications being sent?
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:44, Reply)
Two in London
one in Leeds, possibly one in Newcastle and another in Oxford.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:47, Reply)
What one would be the dream?
(Answer on the left?)
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:51, Reply)
The prospect of moving to London
and paying over the odds for accommodation and the general cost of living, would, frankly, make me come like a faulty fire hydrant.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:31, Reply)
It's not top of my list of places to work.

(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:32, Reply)
Mine either.
Don't get me wrong, I like London; as a place to visit it's magnificent. But I could no more live there than I could spend the rest of my days on the receiving end of a red hot poker.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:35, Reply)
I used to think that
until I started visiting it a lot more often. Now I think I could probably live there for a bit. Not for ages, but for a bit. It'd be interesting, certainly.

I think Wayne Winstone Norris is a lesson to all of us.
You didn't see Bomber or Oz OD'ing did you?
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:37, Reply)
Absolutely not, no.

I'm sure smack is in its infancy in Gateshead.

(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:39, Reply)
Smack is still a form of parental discipline in Gateshead, mate.

How did your nephew get on with his trial?

(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:45, Reply)
Rather well, apparently.
Did everything that was asked of him. He was one of only three defensive players there out of 30 kids (apparently the focus is more on strikers and midfielders), and there were only two players in the team he plays for selected to go. His was an automatic selection, the other kid's name was selected out of a hat.

30 scouts there today from clubs all around the country. Even if he doesn't get selected he's had a brilliant experience.

Fantastic
(I'll ask you more about it on the left of the page if you're still around).
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:52, Reply)
I'm still about.
Had a late meeting tonight; I'm still in wind down mode, even though I'm utterly fucked.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:54, Reply)
Both times I visited, it seemed to be like Sheffield, but twice as grey, stuffed to the seams with miserable rude bastards, and smelling even more of piss.
Couldn't see the appeal myself.
(, Tue 22 Feb 2011, 23:39, Reply)
Plus, it's full of darkies.
Frankly, I wonder how Monty puts up with it all.
