But bad for comedy
Bill Hicks died.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:37, 1 reply, 15 years ago)
pretty much the worst year for comedy ever then

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:38, Reply)
gonna display my age and admit I've never heard of him.

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:39, Reply)
you need to sort that out

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:39, Reply)
I love Bill Hicks
But most of the live shows I've seen repeat a lot from the previous shows. I think in Bill's case the fact that he burned out rather than fade away helped his fame. Much like Cobain, I still see 13 year old mini moshers wearing nirvana hoodies, I predict that if they were still making "music" today that no-one would give a fuck.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:42, Reply)
you are almost certainly right about that
in both cases
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:44, Reply)
YAY! Internet approval!
I shall be happy for the rest of the day.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:48, Reply)
True
I think he would have had a field day when Bush junior got elected though.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:47, Reply)
Three words spring to mind when I think of comedians mocking Bush Jr.
Shooting, Fish and Barrel
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:51, Reply)
Absolutely

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:52, Reply)
Three more: why, fucking and bother.

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:16, Reply)
Exactly, the person who mocked Bush Jr. the best
was Bush Jr.

Angry 80's comedian
Not for everyone, but hugely influential
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:40, Reply)
Some of his stuff is showing its age
Most is still very poignant today. He was very angry, rather sick at times, and as NakedApe says very influential.

Bill Hicks on abortion should be mandatory listening
For all people intent on restricting it unnecessarily:

I couldn't agree

Bill Hicks:
Intelligent, made excellent points, good ranter, admirable chap.

Just not actually funny.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:56, Reply)
his drugs rant is excellent
also, the bit about driving on acid. marvellous.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:02, Reply)
I agree - but the fellow simply doesn't make me laugh.
It's not even a criticism really, I just think he's been miscast as a comedian rather than a social commentator.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:03, Reply)
By the way are you EVER going to come to London?
I'm starting to think you're a Spanky sockpuppet.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:06, Reply)
you of all people should understand what it is to be skint dear boy
I commented yesterday that at the moment I can afford to get married or get my car fixed, but not both. This precludes other activities for me.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:17, Reply)
*narrows eyes*
No denial of the Hanky suggestion, I see.

Perhaps you've been to busy 'pumping your purple spunk-cannon' etc etc too much.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:20, Reply)
do you think I could suffer the crowd of brown-nosers who follow him around?
the fawning over him in the replies to his post this week made me quite nauseated.
