Good Morning, wankchops.
It's pissing down and I've been at work since 8am. I am wearing yesterday's clothes, I need to write to my creditors telling them I have no money to pay them and I have chronic and painful flatulence*.

I am 84. My hobbies are reading, horseriding and swimming.

Ladies, form an orderly queue.

Q: Best year for music in the past 50?
Alt: Predict the next rag-head state to topple
Alt alt: If zombies nommed all of your cake, which Red Dwarf character would you be?

Morning peons
Q: 1989, as it marked the release of not only The Real Thing by Faith No More but also (Monty correct me if I'm wrong here) It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back. Also, at this point in time Metallica were still really, really good, and the Smashing Pumpkins hadn't excreted anything into existence yet. Plus, if you believe the NME, the Stone Roses invented dance music in 1989 with Fools' Gold, which was in no way a pile of self-indulgent shite twenty years ahead of its (OK, Radiohead's) time.

Hey, I'm quite pleased with the rationale there, I only said '89 cos it's when my favourite album was released.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:08, Reply)
A mate of mine reckons Fear of a Black Planet
Is better than Nation of Millions.

I had to laugh. Nation of Millions, is, I think, the only great album to be opened by 'Dangerous' Dave Pearce.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:11, Reply)
Nation of Millions was the first hip-hop album I listened to on repeat
rather than skipping to various individual tracks, as I did with most such albums *cough*Wu-Tang Forever*cough*
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:23, Reply)
Nation of Millions is a towering achievement.
Absolutely focussed, thought through, intelligent and angry.

Totally unlike me.

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:32, Reply)
no.
About 5 foot 8.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 12:26, Reply)
the black album is one of Metallica's best
so you are wrong on at least one count. also, Death Magnetic is superb, so arguably they are still really good
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:12, Reply)
It's probably their third best album
But only because everything since then has been gash, and as such it marked the beginning of a long trajectory downwards after two absolutely stunning albums
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:22, Reply)
thing is
they are all good (except St Anger) but they are all really quite different.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:25, Reply)
Load and Reload are basically the same album with a drop in quality
but I'll give you that the rest are reasonably different from each other. Ride The Lightning starts out like Kill 'Em All pt II until Cliff Burton's influence becomes clear
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:31, Reply)
it was going to be a double album
hence them sounding similar.

Neither is better than the other though. There are some superb tracks on Reload. Fixxxer for one, is an excellent song
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:41, Reply)
Some good reasons here,
I find it best to mainly ignore Metallica until Death Magnetic
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:12, Reply)
I have actually never heard anyone take that view of Metallica before
I know there are those, like Vippers, who consider Death Magnetic decent, but the idea that it's their best album is a new one on me.

And complete bollocks, at that
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:19, Reply)
I have ventured that it is up there with their best
but I also like Load and Reload.

In fact I like everything except for St Anger, which is a complete pile of shit.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:21, Reply)
Not too keen on Load and Reload
Kill 'Em All (1983) Excellent
Ride the Lightning (1984) Excellent
Master of Puppets (1986)Excellent
...And Justice for All (1988)OK
Metallica (1991)Good
Load (1996)Below average
ReLoad (1997)Below average
St. Anger (2003)Awful, just awful
Death Magnetic (2008)Excellent

Darth has a personal hatred of Billy Corgan though. I suspect that Darth's advances in a public toilet were cruelly rebuffed.

Everything after Siamese Dream was gash though.
Still, two good records.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:20, Reply)
They managed a few good songs on Melancollie or however they spelt it
and the odd one off some other albums. I got put off Siamese Dream because Today was played badly by everyone I knew learning the guitar at the time. I loathe that song.

which album(s) do you recommend for faster stuff with more of a rhythm
I like the odd stuff, but doesn't quite work for me all the time.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:37, Reply)
You say you have The Fragile?
All their albums (except Ghosts and arguably Pretty Hate Machine) have faster songs. I'd say With Teeth is their more accessible album, Broken has their hardest songs, and The Downward Spiral is probably their best. Year Zero is interesting, more computer/synth based, and has some great songs on.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:41, Reply)
I do indeed have the Fragile
I know Pretty Hate Machine well, but it is a little too electronic for my tastes (or for my 18 year old taste anyway, so I'll give it another go)

I'm working on getting the others. DLed the new one off the website the other day and am liking that.

The Slip is good

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:40, Reply)
I don't mind synths
Though less a fan of '80s-sounding' synths, which PHM is full of, but somehow it still works on that album. Maybe give Broken or The Downward Spiral a listen?
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:46, Reply)
I think I need to turn off the shuffle and puit more effort in
I have Downward Spiral and With Teeth, so I'll lock myself in a cupbaord and lisetn to them until I like them god dmmit!
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:49, Reply)
TDS is a concept album, so should be listened to in order
With Teeth less so, but it's still made in an order that flows, if that doesn't sound too wanky.
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:56, Reply)
not that wanky
Lateralus is made to be listened to after you have rearranged it in accordance with a Fibonacci spiral. Now that is wanky. But I love it.

I love Bill Hicks
But most of the live shows I've seen repeat a lot from the previous shows. I think in Bill's case the fact that he burned out rather than fade away helped his fame. Much like Cobain, I still see 13 year old mini moshers wearing nirvana hoodies, I predict that if they were still making "music" today that no-one would give a fuck.

you of all people should understand what it is to be skint dear boy
I commented yesterday that at the moment I can afford to get married or get my car fixed, but not both. This precludes other activities for me.

No denial of the Hanky suggestion, I see.

Perhaps you've been to busy 'pumping your purple spunk-cannon' etc etc too much.

do you think I could suffer the crowd of brown-nosers who follow him around?

The whole lab?
Is that the collective for your chins?

That's exactly it
My department's referred to as the 'computer lab', I guess because it sounds cooler than 'room full of pcs and geeks'.

i don't think i have an answer to any of these questions
i am very tired and very very hungover and very very very irritable.

also my brother keeps telling me to type this into a new word doc

=rand.old()

and then press enter. but when i do it NOTHING HAPPENS. he is calling me a spastic. has anyone else seen this, what is it supposed to do, for the love of god?
(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:58, Reply)

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:01, Reply)

i am not clever enough to do links, i have no idea how that shit works. getting pics on my profile took about 5 years and had to be done for me.

(, Wed 23 Feb 2011, 10:06, Reply)
