I tend to only get messages from guys in north africa. Or people I don't really want to talk to (usually they seem dull in their profile, or I'm shallow and they're not cute)

Yes, there are lots of words that could be used, but IF and it's only an if, they are concerned that the person they are writing to are a bit 'simple', they might feel the need to explain what they're saying, rather than hoping you can read between the lines.

No, you know what I mean, the chances are, in real life, you'd know they were joking (if indeed what they're saying is funny).
I just think you should give them a break in the initial exchanges, just so you can identify when and where they're joking, so you can establish common ground.
