That happened to a mate of mine several years ago.It was his 30th birthday and his mum had been asking him what he'd like as a birthday gift, I can't remember what he asked for (probably something guitar related), but he made a specific request.
Imagine his surprise when, come the big day, his mum didn't get him something musical, but wrote in his birthday card that 'thanks to you, 30 kids in *insert name of loser country* will be having lunch for a week'.
What a birthday that was for him.
