I reckon they both exist, on account of them being refferenced throughout history by so many people who aren't linked to each other.
That if so many people claim to have seen them, even like in biblical times and all that, who had no links to, say, the inkans in south america, for them both to have seen them when europe and america haven't seen each other.... that there must be some truth to it.

People throughout history
who've never met or spoken the same language will say these lines are curved.

just because lots of people say something doesn't mean it is true
to use a an oft-overlooked argument, loads of people like U2, but they are demonstrably shite.

My point was our brains are designed to make connections and see causal patterns in things
They're not always there and just as we can be tricked with visual illusions we can be tricked by various other things.

Too obvious for words. You're like a gay pun yo-yo

But surely we'd have better proof by now if that were the case?
I don't agree with you. There were lots of societies who had no communication with each other who came up with strikingly similar creation myths, among other things. These, like ghosts, come from a human desire to explain things whichever way we can. People miss people when they die, it's comforting to think that death isn't the end. But it is.

Your answer is more succinct and much faster than mine.

I really hope it is.
For the sake of most b3tans. We're fucked otherwise.

All that shows
is that primitive people/ancient civilisations the world over have/had similar concerns and beliefs. Most polytheistic religions have, for example, a god of thunder because if you’re a Stone Age man thunder is inexplicable and scary – doesn’t mean thunder gods are real.

One suggested reason why all/most cultures have belief in ghosts or whatever is the same reason people see faces in clouds etc: the human brain is hard-wired to create human forms where they don’t actually exist as a hangover from primitive self-defence fears.

Ooo! isn't you clever.

I'm trying to impress Professor Francesca Stavrakopoulou.
I'm hoping I can convince her to come round my flat to see compelling evidence of pagan fertility rituals aka doing her repeatedly up the gary, but in a nice way.

this is true
my mate has a painting and one day I noticed that a part of it looked like a very realistically painted baby's face staring out of it.

Couldn't stop seeing it after that. Fortunately he took it down when they redecorated.
