I would agree to some extent
Firefly was never actually that good

Yes it was
It was awesome

It really wasn't
if it hadn't been cancelled, just left to limp out it's second season no-one would remember it.

Don't get me wrong, it was mildly enjoyable. But it wasn't groundbreaking, most of the characters were cliche stereotypes. I liked Simon and River, but most of the others just needed a kick up the arse.

It wasn't meant to be groundbreaking
The "sci-fi western" template was established by a little film called Star Wars and the Mal Reynolds/Han Solo comparisons are easy to see. What it did have was excellent dialogue, (mostly) great acting and a very intriguing setup. It was effortlessly entertaining from beginning to end.

The acting was mediocre
precisely because of the stereotypes. The dialogue was clever in some bits, but certainly not all the time. It wasn't futuristic enough either. Fair enough it didn't have to be groundbreaking and awesome, but it could've been a bit more original than it was.
