the addition of cheap labour from abroad can compound the problem and become a focus for peoples need to blame someone/thing for thgeir lot.
In more affulent areas immigration leads to cultural diversity in the shape of shops, restaurants and culture and the negative effects aren't so keenly felt. AS such there tends to be a definitive line in attitudes towards immigration depending on peoples circumstances.
The government does not always address these concerns, Labour was particularly bad at labling anyone who discussed it as racists, forcing the issue "underground".

does not make the people who make it their focus any less racist or bigoted, though. So in that sense Labour are/were entirely right.
especially as low prospects and high unemployment aren't in any way caused by immigration anywhere in this country. I see what you're saying, absolutely, but looking for justification for bigotry is a minefield, it's a very fine like between that and acceptance.

It's not like a bunch of Eastern Europeans arrived (from Eastern Europe) and magically created jobs out of thin air. The jobs were always there, they were just willing to do them, and by all report do them well. The opportunity to work was available but those complaining about lack of jobs are failing to recognise the possibility of doing shit jobs.
