The sole reason for her fame is that Gordon Brown said she was a bigot. If we review his reasons for doing so, to whit her question "where are all those Eastern Europeans coming from?", we can see that she is not only a bigot but a geographical intellect par excellence. Why the FUCK the Deputy Prime Minister should have to entertain an audience with her is quite beyond me. Does every idiot with an opinion get their own five minutes of fame now?

I am as well. Despite being somewhat bored of the song, I still maintain that the guitar solo from Sweet Child is the best ever.
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 13:46, Reply)
The one from Hotel California gets a lot of shouts, but to my mind Slash does a better job on his own than two Eagles ever managed.
I have fond memories of that solo from when I was playing guitar myself. I'd obsessively practiced the whole song for weeks and was thoroughly enjoying playing it. Then I got to the solo and called in some (much more experienced) help to decode it. We got up to a certain point - I think you know where I mean - and he said "no chance mate. Come back in ten years".
Respect.
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 13:59, Reply)
I kind of gave up learning other peoples solos years ago (unless they are easy). Part of it is getting the right guitar sound for a start, particularly with someone like Slash or Kirk Hammett, which are the sort of ones I'd have been learning.

I was just happy to pluck away at my £100 guitar without an amp or effects pedals. As such, my pitiful imitation of the start of the Sweet Child solo sounded awesome to me, and I was gutted to learn that the rest of it was inexlicably far beyond my capabilites.

the addition of cheap labour from abroad can compound the problem and become a focus for peoples need to blame someone/thing for thgeir lot.
In more affulent areas immigration leads to cultural diversity in the shape of shops, restaurants and culture and the negative effects aren't so keenly felt. AS such there tends to be a definitive line in attitudes towards immigration depending on peoples circumstances.
The government does not always address these concerns, Labour was particularly bad at labling anyone who discussed it as racists, forcing the issue "underground".
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 13:32, Reply)
does not make the people who make it their focus any less racist or bigoted, though. So in that sense Labour are/were entirely right.
especially as low prospects and high unemployment aren't in any way caused by immigration anywhere in this country. I see what you're saying, absolutely, but looking for justification for bigotry is a minefield, it's a very fine like between that and acceptance.

The rules that the media impose upon modern-day politics are not what he's been used to dealing with during his career, and not, in my opinion, what they should have to get used to.

and they know they do. I don't like the rules any more than you, but if they can't hack the rules, they shouldn't play the game. I've got a soft spot for Brown - he's the last decent economist we've had in any serious position of power, for a start - but absolutely no sympathy there. He fucked up, and he knows it.
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 13:48, Reply)
I suppose my complaint is with the media more than anything else. I disagree with the notion that we should be privy to every aspect of our politicians' lives, if only because no-one under that kind of scrutiny can be expected to do their job well. I also hate the way Sky jumped on what he'd said as if he'd just advocated ritual sacrifice. The woman WAS a bigot. No, he should not, being mindful of the importance of public appearance, have said so. But who are Sky to assume that the nation as a whole would be outraged by it?

the media are cunts. Sky especially so. See also - banging on like the moral guardians of the world because a footballer did a swear and then fucking constantly repeating the footage for the next ten minutes whilst going "we're sorry this is offensive but it's important you see it" ... if it's offensive, stop fucking showing us. There isn't enough news to go around, so let's over-sensationalise whatever's out there and blow it out of all proportion. People are stupid, they'll lap it up.
And, what's worse, they do.
As regards what Rooney did, he should have known better by the same measure that Brown should (I know it's not the same thing in terms of their profession, but nor is yelling down a camera the same as thinking your mic's off) but he has nonetheless been made an example of by a terrified FA, struggling to adapt to the new rules laid down by their main source of funding.
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 14:06, Reply)
It's a valid argument, but not the only one. I don't for one second see why he should regard himself as a role model, for a start. If your children are swearing on the football pitch that's your fault as a parent, not Rooney's. You might as well say that if all things people aspire to are role models, we need a "professional rock stars association" handing out 4 gig bans every time your guitarist snorts coke of some groupie's tits. I'm sick of this obsession with everything being someone else's fault, Darth. It's pathetic.
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 14:15, Reply)
"My child is overweight, it's not my fault, it's the junk food adverts all over the TV" - who lets him watch the TV and who gives him pocket money? If your child eats crap outside of the house, give him healthy food within and make a correlation between the two apparent. Ban the adverts? Ban your fanny until you can look after what plops out of it

The pulped fruit is better than no fruit, but I agree, it's not an alternative to real fruit.

She's a nothing to me, I can't even bring out enough effort to be annoyed at her.
However, I do have a quick question which doesn't warrant it's own thread. I'm cooking rabbit tonight, once I've removed the remaining bones left in it. I'm going to keep the ingredients of the stew mainly simple, but I want a pretty damn good sauce with it.
So far I'm thinking that I'm going to brown the rabbit meat, then take it out of the pot, before adding red wine, onions, chicken stock, mushrooms, a bay leaf and some other herbs (also something I'll need a little advice with) into the pot, then let it reduce a bit, before putting the meat back in, and adding it into the slow cooker with the vegetables.
I'm mainly wondering if anyone has any tips as to there being anything else I can add?
I'm also considering stirring a small amount of Marmite in, what do you lot think?
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 13:47, Reply)
Use a Bouquet Garni, instead of loose herbs.
Also your stew should contain carrotts and celery softened with the onion

Celery, if I add it for the sauce, I'll take it out before I put it into the slow cooker, honestly can't stand the stuff.

soften it with butter and the onions and grated carrots. That's the base for any italian meat sauce and therefore the base for anthing worth having. You will not notice it's there after an hour of cooking, I promise. I fucking hate celery but still base shitloads of stuff on it.
(, Wed 13 Apr 2011, 13:55, Reply)

not if you're buying a green schwartz teabag. It needs to be the correct herbs really. So tying up some rosemary and thyme with a bay leaf would work.

so rosemary is a good herb to start. Thyme, too. Things that add tartness are good as it'll come out very rich, so something like redcurrants or cranberries at a push is good added later, too. Marsala or port would be better than red wine but unless you've got them lying around stick with the red wine.
