Hitler lead to the death of 11 million people, think about that, that's not just towns and villages, that could be nations of people.
Entire families who were thrown form their home, tortured, murdered, having all their material posessions taken from them. He caused slow and agonising deaths, he studied how to make it more effecient which by grace co-incided with less horific means other than starvation. He made a population almost twice the size of London dead, and far more wishing they were that way. He managed to brainwash a nation, and I choose to think that because I find it hard to believe that a human nation could do that under their own will...... I don't know where I'm going with this, I was going to turn it into something funny but I've turned it into a rant.... Imagine being in one of those concentration camps, seeing those you love around you, your child, your mother, your father, everyone you know and love being starved to the point where it makes an ethopian look well nurished. Praying for their quick release for a bullet. Even today he's fucked up the planet, the nation of israel with the minefield of politics involved wouldn't exist without it.

I would love to have a nazi based movie night with you, "Jakob the Liar" and "Hitler: The rise of evil", then introduce you to a surviver, and then see what happens.

Serious answer:
Blaming it all on Hitler is a gigantic error - charismatic leader, yes - but none of the anti-Semitic ideas he espoused were made up by him. They were endemic throughout Europe, particularly (ironically) in Poland.

I'm not seriously defending the Nazi political ideals - I just like the design of their equipment best, and I like appalling people with my bad taste.

Anti Semitism, and anti everything else that hitler was against... is as old as written record.
Hitler didn't have shit on the egyptions, for example.

It's not that Hitler was the _only_ cause of it, but I think the thing that doesn't sit well with me is that he _could_ have stopped it at any point.

Hitler could not fucking believe that Germany lost WWI.
He simply couldn't comprehend how the Germans could have been fairly beaten, so he seized upon Anti-Semitism and anti-commuism as a way of blaming 'weaklings' and 'traitors' within Germany for this failure.

Unifying the nation in blaming others for their military shortcomings - and the subsequent economic privations caused by the post-war settlement - gave ordinary Germans a way to deal with the shame they felt at losing WWI.

Bit pathetic, isn't it?

Especially since nobody really "won" WWI
Germany just ran out of cannon fodder and food first.

He wasn't very good, unfortunately,
but his obsession with art and architecture was so strong that Albert Speer ended up in one of the most powerful positions in Nazi Germany and he was merely an architect. It's not fashionable to say so (unless you are that utter minge Bryan Ferry) but I confess to liking some of Speer's work, overblown and grandiose as it was. The guilt-ridden tearing-down of all Nazi buildings at the end of the war will, in time, I believe, be seen as a great shame and even a bit of a crime.

His subterranean base under Berlin would have been fucking incredible if it had been finished.

cf Ceaucescu's Palace in Bucharest - ideologically dodgy as fuck and built on the bodies of his citizens, but what an incredible building. It is IMMENSE.

Good point
bar the brainwashing.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 17:37, Reply)
Indeed, that's demonstrably nonsense.
Through good fortune, bullying and some expert political gamesmanship, within a 4-year period Hitler had managed to get a Nazi into every single major political post in Germany - it became literally impossible to stand up to him. Plus half - or more - of the population had no idea about the camps etc. until it was way too late to do anything about politically.

Hitler hears in one of the camps of an old jewish women, she is known to tell the future, and he believes her.
So he jumped in his armed escort and entered the ghetto to seek out the women. Men stood to the side of the road and spat on the back of their hands as he drove around the corner. He comes to a ludka shop where the old women is said to be, there hasn't been as much as a potato in this shop in months, but people still flock there. With a leathered hand, his SS comander raps on the door "Gashtopo ! Open up, the furrah wants a word". After a few hushed words, and a few longer moments, the door opens and the old women. He enters alone.

"M..m....mine furrah, how may I be of assistance?"
"Are you the voman who can tell zee futucha?"
"So they say"
"Then tell me, voman, tell me of my death, on what day do I die?"
"Well, I am in a coundrum, I can tell you, but perhaps you will find a way to cheat death? I hear you are going to liquidize the camp, my death is cirtian anyway, perhaps I shall not say".
"You do not have to be on those trains, the allies could come in time, maybe there is hope"
"This is true, there is always hope. OK, I shall tell you the day of your death"
"... go on...."
"You shall die on a Jewish holiday"
"Oh my, this is grave news....how do you know this?"
"Because any day you die, will be a jewish holiday."
