How do they get away with that? Scientists, I mean.
It's like me saying the sky is bright green and then saying it's unobservable and it is under the right conditions... promise, take my word for it.

it's not "getting away with it" .. it's a matter of how things are publicised
Scientists only hypothesise it exists because it fits the available evidence and theory. The press just can't report anything in a way that accurately reproduces exactly what scientists are saying, because it's got too many ifs, buts and caveats. The press like hyperbole and relevant information.

but they also want to know the relevance of the science to the public. Scientists, too often, just tend to care about the actual science and can't explain it in context.

Look, I'm not saying I like it - christ, getting my work publicised is the bane of my fucking life - but I do at least understand how it works, unlike some scientists.
