It's like me saying the sky is bright green and then saying it's unobservable and it is under the right conditions... promise, take my word for it.

Scientists only hypothesise it exists because it fits the available evidence and theory. The press just can't report anything in a way that accurately reproduces exactly what scientists are saying, because it's got too many ifs, buts and caveats. The press like hyperbole and relevant information.

but they also want to know the relevance of the science to the public. Scientists, too often, just tend to care about the actual science and can't explain it in context.

relevance to the public?

yep, because for some inexplicable reason large swathes of the population are interested. relevance in that sense, rather than importance
Look, I'm not saying I like it - christ, getting my work publicised is the bane of my fucking life - but I do at least understand how it works, unlike some scientists.

You could publicise your work on /OT. We have a learned group of readers who will read it carefully and after thinking about the subject at some depth, make a knob joke out of it.
