we aren't allowed microwaves
but that's because the media lecturer in our staff room set off the smoke alarm by leaving a potato in one for ages

and also plants attract insects etc.

Ah, but if they had the air-con switched on, the air would be filtered so there would be no smell.
And as for plants attracting insects, surely the air the plants produce is far better for your working environment than the slight possibility of a fly landing on a desk.
