But the Merseyside Anomalies Research Association has another idea.
Their researchers believe the light patterns can only be explained by geology.
Bill Bimson said: "I believe the lights are caused when particles in the atmosphere become ionised over fault lines in the earth's crust underneath the Irish Sea.
"This geological theory seems to fit in because there were slight earth tremors in the north west around the days in question, suggesting seismological activity.
"The ionised particles in the air begin to glow."
