There is some seriously quality film-making going on at the moment, films being made in the US and other ocuntries that will be looked back on in their day as being classics. Fast Five for instance. It's easy to forget that things like Casablanca were star vehicles and didn't do that well at the time compared to how it's received now. Films have always been made to make money. That said, I do think CGI has given storytelling a kicking and a half, to the extent that huge amounts of CGI would generally not entice me to see a film, whereas a film based on a book I like would generally get a look in
Edit: they aren't a 'wank fantasy' but I do think Rosamund Pike is really pretty, and after yesterday James McAvoy a bit

It received rapturous critical praise but didn't make anywhere near as much money as a Bogart picture was expected to. Only over time has it garnered classic status.
Still not convinced that anything with Paul Walker in it will ever be considered one for the ages though.

I've seen a lot of shit black and white films, as well as brilliant classics. It's not a dividing line of quality.
But Rosamund Pike would've been wasted in black and white
