That always irritated me.There was a teacher who would reply to "Can I go to the toilet?" with "Well, you're able to, but may you?".
I think can is able to and may is allowed to.

People who say that are fucking twatsIt's clearly implicit in what you said that you were requesting permission, not asking them if you were capable of doing it. I onlce asked at a ticket office if I could have a one day travel card and she said "You can buy one, you can't have it for nothing!" in a LOLwaki joking manner. I wished she had died.
