they aren't all in order
and on rereading them I found the first few kind of painful to read in a Simpson's tie kind of way.

If you were actually keen to read them I could give you a suggested order that would take you through early stuff to the newest following one set of characters

was thinking mainly about the guards ones
in my view the best books are the later guards ones

if he likes them he'll be more likely to read through some of the earlier stuff which fleshes out the other characters a bit more.

but is useful for this purpose
