Something that reinforced my love for dogs was a book called "The mysterious incident of the dog in the night time"
It was written from the point of view of an autistic kid (my dad was quite worried that I understood so much of the kid's point of view), and there are lots of nice things about dogs, but the one that I liked the most was "I like dogs because they're easy to understand, they have four feelings, Happy, Sad, Angry and [a fourth one, hungry? can't remember]... and that's it."
