The world was a considerably more violent place only a hundred years back.Less than that if you want to count wars. Humanity is an inherently violent species and it does not take much in the way of deprivation for us to start using force.
The only things unusual about this spell of civil disorder are the rapidity of its spread and the lack of a cause. It's all happened before and it'll all happen again.
