alt: got to ealing, take photos. Last nights pics made me wish I'd put more effort into trying to be a press photographer
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 10:49, Reply)
except, arguably in this situation
the press, and the "instant nature" of reporting are at least partially responsible for the violence and looting spreading.

Not twitter. Which has had fuck all to do with any of it, but is convenient vessel for middle England to blame.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 10:51, Reply)
oh, I agree that the press didn't help
it's the thrill of the chase and getting the pictures which would attract me to it
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 10:53, Reply)
nothing wrong with that.
But instant reporting, over-hyping and effective glorification of all of it are making it so much worse. The thing that depresses me most? How many of my leftie and Liberal London mates who are now calling for curfews, water cannons and the army. And the fact that they are almost certainly right.

Stupid, stupid cunts like Livingston and groups of socialist/anarchists blaming cuts for what is nothing more than mob robbery - looting which will almost certainly result in a short-term police/military state if it carries on. Completely driving democratic society in the opposite way than they want. How can they be so dumb?
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 10:58, Reply)
the stupidity of people blaming it on the cuts and anything political really bugs me.
they can't seriously think that this is anything more than mob cuntery. It's a horrible state of affairs that there are so many people ready to becoming thieving, violent arseholes at the drop of a hat.

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:14, Reply)
or friends reunited`

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:17, Reply)
I think the question that needs to be asked is why there is mob robbery
the individuals are cunts and need dealing with, yes, but why is this happening now? People have been greedy bastards for ever, so what is it that makes it acceptable in so many people's minds at one time?

Partly it's going to be that other people are doing it (that's a great way for people to assuage guilt - 'if everyone's doing it, it can't be that bad')

I don't know the answer, I doubt the rioters/looters do, but I don't think giving up civil liberties is the answer
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:02, Reply)
the answer is retaliation in the same way
it's no good the authorities doing anything, the people need to rise up and kick the rioters in the collective arse.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:11, Reply)
shall we have colours so we know who's on
which side?
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:12, Reply)
So you're suggesting that a full-on street war is the answer?
How is that not going to end in more people being hurt and more buildings being torched?
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:13, Reply)
you are assuming that I mind either of those things happening

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:17, Reply)
That is something of a lynchpin in my argument, yes.

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:18, Reply)
The "why" is down to one of the cornerstones but also one of the main weaknesses of democracy.
They are doing it because they are cunts and because they can.

I forget the source of the quote, but it's something like "in a true democracy a police force would not be able retain control of streets from a population prepared to fight. The trick to a democracy is to never let the populace know this"

Well, they know now. The quote was meant to apply to legitimate protest but it works the same for mindless thugs. Simply, they are doing it because they are getting away with it.

And that's also why curfew and violent military intervention will work. It's wrong and it's horrible but a free telly is less appealing when it might cost you a cracked skull or a broken back. And *bang* we're back in the fucking dark ages.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:12, Reply)
so what made people realise this now, do you think?
or is it just an accident of timing?
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:13, Reply)
I don't know
but my gut feeling is that in recent times, any "legitimate" protest, such as the initial Tottenham one at the weekend (or, say, the student marches or cuts marches) are accompanied by a violent, criminal element. In the other two examples the police waded straight in, breaking heads and taking names. This time, I think they were a) unprepared for the numbers involved and b) I think they initally stood off because they were scared of being seen as heavy-handed. And everything spreads so fast now that as soon as a few people get away with looting a shop the world knows about it and the cunt world joins in.

I'm only speculating on this part though.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:17, Reply)
The police should have reacted much more quickly and strongly.
All the last few days have done is shown that they can be overwhelmed far too easily. There was an intelligent element to a lot of these riots. Sure, the majority of them were kids, but in some areas fires were set because they knew it would tie the police up and stop them being able to arrest looters.

I doubt things will carry on for much longer as nine police forces are now sending help.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:15, Reply)
I'm afraid I cannot get past 'mob robbery' in this post.
My mind insists on reading it in the style of the Knights who say 'Ni'.

Some drunken oaf started on him and bottled him. His head and face were pissing blood and he was collapsed on the floor. A chap ran over and asked if he was alright, asked if he wanted him to call the police & an ambulance.

The world was a considerably more violent place only a hundred years back.
Less than that if you want to count wars. Humanity is an inherently violent species and it does not take much in the way of deprivation for us to start using force.

The only things unusual about this spell of civil disorder are the rapidity of its spread and the lack of a cause. It's all happened before and it'll all happen again.

When I do that, suddenly all the security gards and staff stare at me intently, because they know I am about to steal goods. I expect for as I walk into the bit between the front enterance and where you enter the foodhall bit, for steal cages to come down and then police to come out of no where, armed police, the ASDA devision of MI5. And they'll be like "Excuse me sir, can I see your bag and your recipty..... Well, well, well, looks like you have two packets of bacon here but only one on the till. YOU'RE A THIEF AND YOU'RE GOING DOWN FOR A VERY LONG TIME".
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:15, Reply)
When do you think the I-phone 5 will come out Gonz?

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:18, Reply)
First week of Oct, in the UK.
There might possibly an "iPhone for the masses", a cheap model that would make it affordable in emerging markets, to compete with the low-end level of Android. Cut a loss on the hardware and make a fortune in iTunes/AppStore.

I can't see me updating to the iPhone 5 this year, the only new feature I'd like is the reportably bigger screen, but I have an iPad to cator for that, and if it means I can drop my contract/insurance from £70 down to £25, then I don't think there is anything worth upgrading for.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:22, Reply)
I have a 3gs you see...due for an upgrade around christmas
Not sure whether to just get a 4 cheaply or splash out on a 5

If you 'splash out' on a phone
it might stop working.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:32, Reply)
The big improvements this year is software based, except for a reportably much bigger screen.
If you use up a big contract's worth of stuff, then I'd go for iPhone 5, but if you only have a big contract to make up the cost of the phone, then I'd go for the iPhone 4 (or whatever they make the 'iPhone Lite' to be).
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:33, Reply)

I'm not just talking about the rioters
Those justifying it are first and foremost cunts, not left or right wing. See Livingston, Ken.

Be really careful in this area, because those who try and make political capital out of this either way are equally cunty. To say that since Tories aren't sympathising then Tories must be good is as bad as Livingston saying it's down to cuts so Tories must be bad.

There's nothing overtly political in this and trying to make it so is the last resort of those too daft to see what's going on.

Makes it even better when they say later on that 4 youths came, and had the shit kicked out of them for starting trouble.

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:41, Reply)
Good for them.
If people are going to loot them and destroy things they work so hard to maintain, they should be able to defend themselves. I'm glad they stuck together to protect their business.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:40, Reply)
It's made even better by the fact that they kept their shops open
As they didn't need to close.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:41, Reply)
Bad idea. I can understand the desire to do so
but how is trying to fight them going to prevent more people being hurt and more buildings torched?

There are hundreds of these cunts and they're armed with bricks, bottle and petrol bombs. Riot police can handle that sort of crowd, private citizens can't, no matter how hairy they are.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:41, Reply)
The rioters are mostly cowards, I'd say
They're barely facing any resistance, and with their faces covered, they think they can get away with it. A good kicking is just what they need, might make them reconsider what they're doing.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:43, Reply)
The problem here is
as soon as the police employ more heavy handed tactics, it will in some people eyes 'legitimise the rioters position, thus swaying opinion and potentially brining more people out onto the streets.

That is why they are standing off.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:46, Reply)
I don't see how preserving people in salt water will help.

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:53, Reply)
It'll certainly stop them rioting.

(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:55, Reply)
It's not good, but unfortunately they're now stuck between a rock and a hard place
I'm of the opinion that tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets would clear the majority of the rioters pretty damn quickly, run that alongside kettling from riot/armed police, and you could take the sting out of it quickly.

However, if they are too heavy handed, it can work against them, as you say.
(, Tue 9 Aug 2011, 11:54, Reply)
there ain't no water cannons in the country
