It was a sublime experience
Worth the 8.5 hours ascent, mostly in darkness, queuing with thousands of other climbers, and then the 4 hours of descent down boring, dangerous, knee-destroying steep switchbacks cut into the dirt and rocks.

I would not do it again.
The rest of the trip was bloody brilliant too, Japan's a fascinating country.

One woman we met, an American just finishing her 2nd year of teaching there
Had a friend who was asked if she was blind on account of her having blue eyes.

I've wanted to go since I was about 7.
I have (kind of) got family out there, somewhere. My uncle married a Japanese woman.

I didn't meet him.
I've also wanted to go there for many years, and wish I'd gone sooner.
