I stick one (or a plastic fork) into the earth pin so that continental 2 pin plugs can be used in a UK socket
it's safe enough but a little naughty.

The clue is in the phrase "continental 2 pin plugs "
Also, I'm pretty sure the pin spacing on US plugs is wrong for UK sockets, where as euro plugs will go with a little force.
