"The importance of being Ernest" is a playmaybe the work of Hogarth might be a better example.
Taken out of context it isn't half as interesting, witty and enjoyable.

Now with a painting by Hogarththere are already embedded visual clues that allow you to guess pretty accurately at the historical context.Art doesn't exist in a vacuum.
