Aye, 'New York' is the one I mean

(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 8:48, 2 replies, latest was 14 years ago)
The video was filmed in front of the twin towers on 7 Sept 2001.
(that's one of those obscure facts that actually everybody knows, I believe)
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 8:55, Reply)
You think he was scoping them out?
What a cunt
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 8:59, Reply)
Let's face it, without the towers actually toppling, most people would never have heard of him.

(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:00, Reply)
They missed too
*makes note to shorten fuses for next time*
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:00, Reply)
Ha.
Just because you weren't old enough to have heard of them by the time they came down, youngling!
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:04, Reply)
I still remember quite a lot about the day they came down!

(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:09, Reply)
Sorry, I actually meant 'Until the day they came down'
my messy use of English let me down again.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:10, Reply)
Haha, piss off

(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:14, Reply)
I moved into the first house I bought with my ex-wife the day they came down
First picture we unpacked and hung on the wall was a shot she'd taken of the towers years before. Then we turned the telly on and found out. Creepy trufax.

That's quite mental
It was a Tuesday, after getting into an argument with someone at lunchtime, I'd pointed out I didn't 'give a shit what he said, as I could have him anyday' (no, not in a gay way).

After History, when I was heading up to Textiles, he confronted me, put me up against a wall by the throat, and asked 'why the fuck I'd been saying I could batter him?'

I grabbed his throat back, and said 'Because I fucking could', and pushed him back into the window, where he tripped over the bag he'd left.

It was a good day. Then, when I got home, it got very strange, very quickly. But, I remember it well.

Anything about the day before, or after it? Not a fucking clue.

I was in a greasy spoon in Slough and heard about the first plane on the radio. Went back to the office and saw the rest of it happen on TV. A fuckwit db analyst found a website where you could listen to the NY police radios and decided to blare it out in the office. I told him to turn it off as we didn't know if any colleagues had friends or family in NY. He refused so I gave him a written warning.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:23, Reply)

written warning deserved kicking
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:24, Reply)
We used to refer to him as Thrush.
I'm sure you can work out why.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:25, Reply)
Yep

(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:27, Reply)
I'm guessing it's not because he had a lovely singing voice in the spring and summer, right?

(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:29, Reply)
My boss used to whistle an attempt at birdsong every time the twat walked past him.
He never guessed.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:31, Reply)
I always assumed "nuclear" would be the Ryan Adams song everyone knew
Ah well. Live and learn. I still think most of his stuff is more good than bad.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:04, Reply)
You know, I don't think I've ever really bothered listening to him
The NME was all over him about 10 years or so ago and that probably put me off a bit.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:06, Reply)
Luckily, since I'm WELLOLD
I stopped reading the NME in about 1993. Otherwise I'd have probably had the same reaction as you.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:08, Reply)
I probably would have too actually
I'm glad I missed that.

And yes, 10 years exactly makes sense, that's when Gold came out.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:08, Reply)
Is that one well known?
It's the first track on Demolotion, isn't it? Which wasn't one of his better received albums.

I know they used Rescue Blues at the end of Black Hawk Down and in Sweet Home Alabama, so I assumed that might be pretty famous. And Answering Bell was on music television all the time when I was in the US in early 2002 but I don't know about here.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:08, Reply)
I dunno, Nuclear is the only one I've ever heard on radio
And it was that one that started me listening to him. Yeah, it was the only single on demolition and I think the only top 40 single he has had in the UK.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:11, Reply)
...or indeed not, after googling.
"so alive" got to 27.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:11, Reply)
Bloody Hell
I'd forgotten about that album completely. I really liked Rock N Roll. Especially 1974.

I'd also forgotten the Love Is Hell EPs until I just googled him too. Although that may be no bad thing, as one of them has that dull version of Wonderwall on it (although in fairness, it's probably hard to make Wonderwall not dull)
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:15, Reply)
Is that the one he does a cover of with Neurosis Whinealot? I fucking hate that, but I've only heard the duet version.
It's the stuff off Heartbreaker I really love - shakedown on 9th street is superb.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:18, Reply)
After a 30 second pause to translate what you meant by 'Neurosis Whinealot'
I don't think that the duet is the EP version. Not that that makes the EP version any better.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:23, Reply)
Ah, sorry, it's been the usual term for her amongst my circle of friends since the mid nineties
there's only so many cutlery gags you can make, after all.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:24, Reply)
I actually translated wrong and thought you meant Amy Winehouse, and I was still talking about Wonderwall.
but no, I don't believe the 1974 on Rock N Roll is Alannis Morisette. But even if it is, I still like it.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:30, Reply)
I've just listened again
it's not as bad as I remember. Maybe I'm mellowing.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVykzdw-kGY

Just to be clear - it's just Alannis I dislike here.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:33, Reply)
Oh I got that, yes.
I'm no fan either.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:35, Reply)
Just spotted your new sig.
Steve Earle is probably my favourite living recording artist. You have good taste, my friend.

or we both have bad taste, one of the two.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:17, Reply)
Well, everyday's a school day.
I didn't know that at all. I guess I've been out of touch with the charts for even longer than I'd thought.
(, Wed 12 Oct 2011, 9:12, Reply)
There are still charts?
