The taser was inspired by a fictional invention from one of a series of books about a boy called Tom Swift and is an acronym for Thomas A. Swift's Electronic Rifle.

I now expect everyone to either say they already knew that, or to quickly disprove this with FACTS, but I find it interesting. As you were.
