I think comparitive evolution comes into play a bit.We've not been around that long but the universe is dead old and that. Intelligent life evolving at roughly the same time, seems a bit far fetched.
But then, some folks believe in fairies (insert standard joke about darth)

We've been around a few hundred thousand yearsOut of 4.5 billion. If we were wiped out by a comet tomorrow, what would be left of us in 50 million years time? Sod all. There's by no means a reason to suppose we're the first intelligent life to evolve on this planet.
