I seem to remember Vancouver often comes top of the "best cities to live in" lists
However this is based on cleanliness, lack of crime, safe cheap transport, low house prices etc, etc; boring, boring, boring...

Cities should be a bit grimey, have an edge, a slightly dangerous side. That is where they excel and that is why they drive creativity in music, fashion, lierature, new companies and the best restaurants to name but a few.

this is why London is excellent, the incredible mix of socioeconomic ares, the large immigrant population add a vibrancy, variation and excitment and you just don't find in parochial towns and cities.

Manchester is like that but on a smaller scale obviously.
I enjoyed my ten years there.

I've never been so couldn't really comment...
i suppose i was really suggesting that places like Reading, Milton Keynes and their Northern equivilants are blackholes for the soul

Vancouver also has some of the best marijuana in the world.

It really, really does.
There is nothing like going for a hike and not being able to work out if everything really is that beautiful.

Ohhhh man and wreck beach is excellent for being naked, stoned and looking at nature.
