i had a delicious and not at all grey and watery mushroom soup and water
i had an egg credit card as a student, promptly racked up £6,000, spent the next 4 years dodging them. eventually qualified as a solicitor and paid them off in 3 months, but it still haunts my credit rating. entirely my own stupid fault, but really, who gives £6,000 credit to a student?!

Predatory lenders.

i'm never quite sure whether responsibility lies more with the lender or the borrower
i mean, mine was just stupid, as i was spending it on clothes and going out, but i also knew when i qualified i would be able to afford it. but lots of people just get attracted by the flashy deals. a bit immoral that.

If they don't check you out, earnings etc
Then you can usually barter them down.

they usually end up selling it off cheap to a company like cabot
which will then try and agree a 50-75% deal with you

the irony is
even though i paid it all off about 6 years ago now, it still mashes my credit rating to the extent that i bet they wouldn't lend to me again. not that i've tried.
