I have a CRT so HD channels are probably pointlessThis whole thing is irritating as I don't want satelitte/cable at all, but apparently have no choice. I guess I could get a free sat box

That's from upscaling. You don't get it with HD signals.Or indeed SD that was filmed after flat panel TVs were invented in the 19th century or whatever, you dinosaur.
