I do think some strong discipline is exactly what's needed

I agree with the discipline point but what I was getting at is that people are making a fuss about introducing spelling, grammar and fact learning into SCHOOLS.

Children shouldn't learn facts, dates, formulas etc by rote, but they need to learn them and then be taught to use them in actual situations.

Also a clip on the ear won't do them any harm
