there's two pumps in big rooms with half a dozen big mosters in each and i've got about 15% health and no ammo, i think Valve hate me

Have you tried just hitting all the buttons as quickly as you can?
I used to employ this method quite effectively if I ever played Street Fighter on my friend's Nintendo many years ago.
Word of warning though, if your friend is taking the game very seriously and pressing specific buttons so that his little man will do his "special move", it will upset him if you win by doing this.

Also, if you've got one of the controller things with an autofire switch on it
you can pretty much just move your little man forwards and it pretty much does the rest for you.

Whichever skill you need to be good with the sniper rifle is not one I have
My current method involves the combat shotgun, it works, but I lose a lot of life.

I made my character look like a chinese downsy
Then gave him 10 strength 10 endurance and 1 intelligence and 1 charisma.
He hits deathclaws in the head with a pipe until they are dead.
