Charles Stross, one of his characters used the phrase "when the tentacle hits the pentacle"* in place of "when the shit hits the fan" which I found quite amusing.

*it's an occult end-of-the-world type book.

I knew someone that used to say 'shit in the dark'
Meaning 'unpleasant surprise'. At first I thought she'd just misunderstood the expression 'shot in the dark'.
