The thing is it's not a stupid or evil as it might appear.
If you accept that there is a sky-wizard and that we have souls, which is what makes us people, then it's perfectly legitimate to decide that the soul and therefore person-hood comes into existence at the moment of conception. this means that any abortion = murder , or at least manslaughter and it's pretty legitimate to oppose it in all, or nearly all, cases.

Now I don't believe either of these things and I think people who do are a bit stupid, but once you've swallowed the sky-wizard, this bit actually makes a kind of sense.
