if you go to "get info" on itunes, it will give you specified filepath that it thinks the song will be in.
Make sure it is in that folder, and the song will play. If you have external hard drives etc, the letter at the start can change depending on what order everything is hooked up.

My mate has it setup on his iPad and can play iTunes, Spotify, NAS box saved stuff, etc. to two different zones in his house at the same time

iTunes, Apple TV, all computers and tablets etc connected. Any film or song available at the drop of a hat.
Seems like a lot of faff to me though.
