360 was (mostly) backwards compatible with the xbox.The ps3 was initially compatible with the ps2, but this was later disabled.

I think it was because the backwards compatibility only worked half the time, so they fucked it off.Although they did also big up the fact on launch that you could run linux on it, then disable that also. In short, Sony are cunts.
