Dogs in general have evolved to be really fucking good at hunting and killing in packs and that's not seen as any kind of bar to ownership. What the breed was bred for has nothing to do with temprament.
Or to put it another way, bull terriers are no more likely to fight things than old english sheepdogs are. Bull terriers are simply better at it when they do.
