Tax is a percentage of earning. By saying you have a massive tax bill it means you also have massive earnings.
Just pointing this out because some people wouldn't have noticed.

That's not was I was aiming to say, i'm not battered
my point is i don't think one realises quite how much one pays out in relation to overall earnings.

And that is before VAT and other "stealth" taxes
