I've bought expensive guitars in the past, but I had the money to pay for them and at least one of them has risen in value.
Although I've never bought anything with the intention of selling it at a profit.
Dull answer: best investment was a Post Office Capital Bond with an interest rate fixed for five years, back when interest rates hit 15% in the early 90s.
