What are your biggest extravagances? Stupidest money related things you've done? Best/worst investments?

and then forgot I was playing and went to bed. Finished 2nd somehow, so it worked out.
I stopped playing online poker shortly after that.

there were 3 other players still in when I stopped, and the computer would put in my blinds and fold if anyone raised. 3rd and 4th place finishers were idiots and let me win a couple of hands, and by chance I had the best hand when the computer put me all-in, and then they both went all-in against the eventual winner. Won about $420.

i made like £9 in three hours. Total waste of my time.

so that the other players can't just sit there for ages deciding what to do - otherwise it's horribly boring. Also since I'm not very good I didn't want people who were having the time to make good decisions.

Even then it's like £60-£80 a month for booze and maybe the same again for homebrew. Everything else I spend more on I consider an esential.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 9:59, Reply)

Buying a house I guess. Otherwise it's drink I spend most of my wonga on. Few luxuries like the odd holiday, and festival. But I make a it of savings by doing almost all my own maintenance at home (except gas and electrics) my car was pretty much free, and I do all the work on that myself. It's about finding a balance. I could give a shit about savings, I'm sat on a house that's value is only increasing, I am insured up the wahoo for any serious problems (as long as they don't involve my left leg). I don't know how people find it so hard.
Oh, wait, yeah, kids are expensive you fools. Kids are a terrible idea.
My worst investment was probably all the limited edition games I used to preorder, they're worth all of Fuck all now.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:01, Reply)

I'm binning all my old shite and stuff left in our house onto eBay at the moment. Free moneys
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:11, Reply)

I buy too many computer games, I don't even end up playing them, I just buy them.
I spend way too much money on fripperies like books and booze and just shit I don't need but fuck it.
Best investment would be my duvet it is very nice and I like sleeping under it.

They're money pits, but fabulous money pits. Just look at my legs...
I once ignored a overdraft warning from Nationwide when I was 17/18 and ended up getting charged £250 instead of just paying 10 quid when I first got warned.
Best investment - a proper suit.

I'm getting fucking fed up of swapping tyres. But I don't want to, because a)It's really gay and b)I don't know enough about bikes these days to know what bits are good or not and c)It really is supremely, arse-reamingly gay.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:05, Reply)

Got really good reviews. I don't understand the levels of kit any more. Last time I paid any serious attention to road mechs etc it was becuase they were half the price of off-road stuff so I used to run durace mechd rather than XT on my mountain bike.
I'm sure it was Durace-Ultegra-105 (decreasing in quality) back in the day, Campag Record for the uberponce, but I don't see anything I recognise now. And all cheap frames are aluminium and I fucking hate the way aluminium rides.

to leave in my in laws house in France. It's a great bike for occasional rides, it's got carbon forks, and for £300 that's a real bargain. The only thing I wasn't uber keen on was the shifters, which are the little click switches, rather than the whole brake shifter moving, but you get used to it.
I think it's got 105 chain rings, but a sram cassette, or possibly the other way round, frankly I don't care that much.
Aluminium on a road bike is a good thing, though I understand it's bad for mountain bikes, but as I've never mountain biked, I don't know, and neither do I care.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:23, Reply)

It does look nice. And I know I've got little choice about the aluminium, and I understand why roadies like it. I just don't.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:47, Reply)

You'll have to swap tyres on all bikes. It's a massive pain, especially in this kind of weather. "OH WAIT, I'M GONNA SNOW ALL UP IN YA AGAIN."
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:12, Reply)

Explosif for off-road fun with all purpose tyres. Why would I change tyres beyond that? I don't give enough of a shit to change tyres for conditions, even when racing mountain bikes. 95% of mountain bikers don't even have close to the ability to explore the limits of a half-decent set of all-weather tyres ;)
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:16, Reply)

It's a whole lotta bike for not very much money. www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/tech/bikes/129441/2/bike-test-do-you-get-what-you-pay-for.html

Aluminium though *shakes head sadly*

I know it's stiff, yada yada, but it's uncomfortable.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:26, Reply)

You're verging on the "I can tell the difference between different types of whiskey" territory here.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:29, Reply)

But I have ridden and raced a fuckload of mountain bikes over the last 20+ years and trust me on this, Aluminum frames do not absorb trail buzz because the specific difference in a couple of key modulus of elasticity properties of aluminium alloys means they cannot absorb fast paced, small surface inperfections. It's their major flaw, and it is why aluminium never caught on except in a niche sector of the market until front suspension became "standard"
It's therefore reasonable to suspect that exactly the same will be true of road bikes. However, in the road bike market, people value stiffness over comfort, hence why aluminium and carbon dominate.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:34, Reply)

I wanted to spend about half that on the whole bike.
Guess I'm going to have to man up and go aluminium.

( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:05, Reply)

For every share I purchased (at a discount) they gave me another share free. Combination of this and the share price rising meant I made about £100,000 over 5 years.
I spend too much money on good food & drink.

Best investements have all been houses, obv. Oh, and a 1992 5 series BMW that I drove for 2 years, barely maintained and it somehow went up in value.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:08, Reply)

I expect most people would consider that stupid, but I love them.
My next biggest extravagance will be buying a car. It's going to be 20+ years old, poor on petrol and expensive to find parts for.
On the plus side, I'm currently in the black for the first time in a decade and it's only getting better, so that's nice. Plus I'll be buying my own place in a year or two.

but I'm safe in the knowledge that my house in London will retain its value.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:16, Reply)

because London and the South-East is the only part of the UK that actually needs a property price crash.
( , Thu 4 Apr 2013, 10:21, Reply)

but that's the problem. When people whine about houses being overpriced, they simply mean "houses in the south east are overpriced"

Although I've never bought anything with the intention of selling it at a profit.
Dull answer: best investment was a Post Office Capital Bond with an interest rate fixed for five years, back when interest rates hit 15% in the early 90s.
