the question is whether any party is willing to face down the threats that "we'll all leave the country" if you actually make people and companies pay the tax they ought to.

Most idividuals (employed people) pay their taxes. High net worth not so much. Corporations less so again.
I wouldn't want to pay a lot more to rescue people from their situations if others above me weren't doing their bit. It's a vicious circle.

Most of the population doesn't seem too appalled by people getting a shittier deal in life than themselves.

You don't need to pay a lot more, that's the whole point
you really don't contribute as much as you think you do, it's the Starbucks, Amazons and investment banks that provide the bulk of the money.
