Hey Rory, I'm long term unemployed and, not being willing to accept jobs that I feel are beneath me
or to commute in any way, I haven't found a job yet. No matter how much I whinge about it, this situation doesn't seem to change. What can I do to stop the world being so mean to me?

Your 'searching' for employment that doesn't exist, because believe it or not you have to travel further than the end of the road, this is the 21st century not the fourteenth, and you are not a landed serf. There's plenty of jobs out there, albeit unskilled perhaps, but you aint landed gentry neither so get your hands a bit dirty.
