Gnah' fuck fuck fuck, I just finished a huuuuge project that i've put stupidly large hours into (did 107 hours in 10 working days)....
.... I just finished it last night, just was about to put my stamp on it, and there has been a massive server failure and i've lost a shitload of work; 'cus on this framwork you have to work directly on the server, you can't work locally. And there was no backup 'cus its a stage env. I think it'll only take me 2-3 days to recreate it, 'cus I've got some stuff saved, but still..... I was looking forward to everyone going "HOLY SHIT YOU'RE AWESOME" on monday =(

Somebody has a development framework that allows work to be lost due to a server failure?
In 2013?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHOOOOOOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I'm totes sympathetic and that but ... ahahahahahahahaha. No. I just can't find space for the sympathy because my face is totally full of scorn and derision. Soz.

you really are a dullard

Probs.
But I'm not the one who just wasted three days of his life on work that has been needlessly thrown away.

I've seen you on facebook, you've wasted WAY more than 3 days in your life.
I wouldn't say it was needlessly thrown away.

I once lost about six months of work because a rocket exploded on take off.
If you're going to lose work you should do it with massive billion-dollar explosions and not a rack overheating in Slough.

Gonzo loves hot racks. Hurhurhur

If you got your calculations better, maybe you wouldn't have failed at your task so expediently.

I didn't have anything to do with the rocket.
My stuff was in the payload. So I suppose it's now spread across a thousand acres of French Guiana or sutin.

I'm not entirely sure you're aware of all the prerequisites...
... but yeah', in the framework you work directly on the server. It's a single-use development server that gets thrown away when I'm done. I'm not in charge of the servers, I just work off them.

I'm not super duper interesting in the details
but any development process that allows you to lose a non-negligible amount of work because of a server failure is shit. Not 'arguably shit' or 'a compromise because of la-di-da'. It is fundamentally and inexcusably shit.

It's not ideal, but for the rareity of this happening, is it worth (all the time) the budget and time setting up a backup system for a single-use server-space for every dev for every client?

(, Sun 28 Apr 2013, 18:08, Reply)
Dunno.
It's your life.

But real software development would never do anything so ... 1970s.
