I knew, they're a lot less common than that article makes out, at least round here anyway.
I've just had a monster gym session, moved on to proper free weights, it's painful, but it feels so good.

I think the weight machines are a great invention gets novices in to the idea and stances and technique for weight training without the danger of dropping a large bar on your face

Free weight are better as you have to stabile while you lift

Yeah, but the machines give you a chance to build some muscle tone initially, so you can lift properly.
Also, you'd be surprised how good modern machines are. They can be set to be a little free so you can learn control. These days it's more getting used to knowing how the muscle should feel as it's being worked, so you can transfer that to a free weight scenario, and know you're doing it right
