Genuine question here, I honestly thought they were the same band but jsut putting out stuff under a different name. Is that not true?

Yup you're right but the music is noticeably different.
The Parliament stuff is slicker and more disco-ey, the Funkadelic records were more 'out there' and in some cases unlistenably so, but at least not gay. 'Maggot Brain' was in the top ten rock records of all time in some poll or other - Rolling Stone or something like that. 'Super Stupid' could easily have been Hendrix, Eddie Hazell was a great player.
