most people grow out of "must be hot" by about 25.

Yeah, good point.
That said I do think physical attraction matters, but as you said, 'pretty' people are so often lacking in anything else. I'll take average looking but good in bed and good conversation any day.

the thing is, your perception of physical attraction varies once you get to know the person
so for online dating or a pub hook-up, it's key, and for a lot of people it won't move beyond the first impression for something so transient. but if it's someone you know through work, or as a friend, or through friends at a party, or your sister in some people's cases, your perception does change. i have so many friends who are blissfully happily married to someone who is the exact opposite of what they think is hot - yet now they'd tell you that person is the hottest person on the planet, and they mean it.

we all know you love a bit of curvaceous ginge.
