New job
I've got a job starting in 1 month. My PhD is finishing then, the thesis is in final corrections...

And I'm absolutely shitting bricks terrified. Really terrified. This is my first non-temp job and it's a huge step up in responsibility - they said in the interview that it's in at the deep end with minimal supervision.

Is it just me, or is it this normal to be absolutely bone deep scared of the job? No matter how much I reassure myself that it'll be fine, that the worst that could happen is I get fired... I'm still frightened :S

it is normal
and quite often a company will tell you it is in at the deep end with minimal supervision

realistically though, regardless of someone's qualifications, it would be moronic to assume that they can do a job straight from the word go.

you'll be fine.

Its normal
not Bert's comment, but feeling scared of a new job.

I'm always the same when I start a new one.

100k
Nice to know that I'm not alone in being told "Deep end, minimal supervision".

It's kinda intimidating though. It's a research job... and they've got a specific project they want to do. It's not an ongoing one... it starts when I do. I'll be responsible for the whole thing.

Metaphorically speaking, my arse is now clenched so tight you couldn't get a bus ticket between the cheeks.

Dude
Not quite the same thing, but I freelance and everytime I get asked to do something different I shit meself- but you've got to remember that you've been hired because they think you're up to the job, and there's no way they would have asked you if they didn't think you could do it- they wouldn't take the risk. So take a deep breath and go for it- chances are you'll be great and the confidence and skills you'll get from it will help you advance.

Good luck x

Don't worry about it.
I haven't had a clue what I'm supposed to be doing for my past two jobs.

Signed,

Even at the lower end of the scale.
Doesn't matter what the job is from the humble cleaner to Prime Minister. When you start a new job it's scary. Ok, some are scarier than others but it's just fear of the unknown. After 1 week you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about.

You'll be fine
I was in exactly the same situation myself 3 months ago, shitting it knowing I'm working with bloody clever people everywhere so there's no chance of bluffing.

They did hire you for a reason - sometimes it can be slightly more complicated than MM's appraisal if you're working in research at a Uni but they can't expect you to do the job perfectly on day one.

Don't worry and remember to ask questions if you need to.

What are you doing btw?
